Project Description
Exploring careers in Medicine at St Columbas High School
Working in partnership with Scottish Charity, You Can Be A Doctor, St Columbas High School organised a range of interactive events designed to generate interest in careers within the healthcare industry.
The objective of the charity is ran by doctors and medical students and aims to make healthcare careers more accessible to young people who have never previously thought about careers in medicine, preventing barriers for entry and making the industry more inclusive.
The interactive events were themed around the cardiovascular system and the digestive system and the S1 pupils involved ranged from Consultant Psychiatrist, Consultant Geriatrician with a sub speciality of strokes, Consultant Anaesthetist for mostly for brain and spine surgery and a Consultant in Anaesthetics and Intensive Care Medicine. This allowed the young people to understand the diversity and different specialisms within the sector as well as the different pathways to entry to the medical profession.
The benefit of the session was that the pupils were able to understand that doctors and consultants were people who had backgrounds similar to them which built their confidence.
