The event was organised after an invitation from Susan Budd, Community Engagement & Support Officer at Leuchars Station, and was designed to help pupils build confidence, teamwork and communication skills through a series of interactive challenges. It also aimed to broaden awareness of career pathways and give young people an insight into the realities of life and work within the Army.

Learning Through Challenge

The Challenge Day featured 16 interactive activity stations, each focused on developing workplace and life skills such as communication, leadership, organisation, problem-solving and resilience.

Working in teams, pupils rotated through a series of activities including:

• An 8-metre climbing wall
• A seven-person bicycle challenge
• Team problem-solving puzzles
• Bridge-building activities
• Interactive gaming challenges
• Physical and mental team tasks

The activities were designed to encourage young people to work together, support one another and push themselves beyond their comfort zones.

By taking part in a wide variety of challenges, pupils gained practical experience of the skills required in both military and civilian workplaces while having fun in a supportive and engaging environment.

Partnership with the British Army

The British Army has built a strong relationship with Madras College through ongoing employer engagement activities and has become a valued partner in supporting young people’s skills development.

Leuchars Station personnel led and facilitated the activities, sharing insights into Army careers and demonstrating how skills such as teamwork, resilience and leadership are essential both within the Armed Forces and across many other industries.

With the base located close to the school, the event also provided pupils with a unique opportunity to gain a greater understanding of an important local employer and the opportunities available within the organisation.

Building Confidence and Connections

Throughout the day, pupils worked alongside classmates in a variety of different teams, strengthening relationships while learning the importance of effective communication and collaboration.

Many pupils embraced opportunities to challenge themselves in unfamiliar situations, developing greater confidence and resilience as they worked through each activity.

The experience also highlighted the value of stepping outside comfort zones and demonstrated that skills can often be developed in practical settings that differ significantly from traditional classroom learning.

Feedback from pupils was overwhelmingly positive, with many highlighting both the enjoyment and learning they gained from the experience.

The feedback demonstrated how the event successfully engaged pupils while helping them develop valuable skills and confidence.

Staff Reflections

School staff were equally positive about the impact of the day.

Guidance staff noted how well pupils worked together throughout the various activities and observed that the experience helped strengthen relationships across the year group. They also highlighted that many learners actively challenged themselves to try new experiences and demonstrated resilience when faced with unfamiliar tasks.

The event provided an opportunity for pupils to develop important employability skills in a practical and memorable way, helping them recognise strengths they may not have previously realised they possessed.

The Team Building Challenge Day delivered a range of positive outcomes for participating young people, including:
