Project Description

Name of School: Pupil Support Service (PSS)
Partners/Businesses Involved: Ocean Youth Trust Scotland, Rotary Clubs, Lodge 19 of the Masons, RYA Foundation
Sector/Industry: Sport & Leisure
Activity Type: Entrepreneurship | Skills Development

Throughout the voyage, pupils lived and worked together onboard the vessel, sharing responsibilities and contributing to the smooth operation of the boat.

The experience gave young people the opportunity to learn practical sailing skills, including handling ropes, navigating routines and operating equipment safely. More importantly, it encouraged learners to become part of a team, supporting one another through challenges and developing the confidence needed to take on new responsibilities.

Unlike a traditional classroom setting, the voyage offered a unique learning environment where young people could fully immerse themselves in new experiences and develop skills through practical application.

Building Confidence Through Challenge

Ocean Youth Trust Scotland describes its voyages as a “floating outdoor education centre”, providing young people with opportunities to discover their full potential through shared challenges and experiences.

During the voyage, participants were encouraged to step outside their comfort zones and embrace new experiences. They worked together to solve problems, support fellow crew members and contribute to the success of the voyage.

The experience helped pupils develop essential transferable skills including:

  • Confidence and self-belief
  • Communication and teamwork
  • Leadership and responsibility
  • Problem-solving and resilience
  • Social and life skills
  • Independence and adaptability

The voyage also provided an opportunity for young people to disconnect from many of the distractions they face in everyday life and focus on personal development, wellbeing and building positive relationships.

Creating a Sense of Community

A key feature of the programme was the strong sense of community developed onboard.

Living, learning and working together encouraged pupils to develop meaningful friendships and support networks while learning the importance of cooperation and trust. By sharing responsibilities and relying on one another throughout the voyage, participants developed a stronger appreciation of teamwork and collective achievement.

For many young people, the experience provided opportunities to build friendships that continued after the voyage had ended.

What Young People Said

Feedback from pupils highlighted the lasting impact of the experience and the variety of skills they developed throughout the voyage.

One learner reflected:

“I learned to helm the boat and put the sails up. I also learned to live without my phone.”

Another pupil commented:

“I was working as part of a team.”

The experience also helped young people form new connections and friendships:

“I met some new friends on the boat and I have met up with them since leaving.”

Learners also recognised the responsibility involved in keeping the crew safe:

“On watch we looked out for dangers and communicated them to the helm buoys on the port.”

These comments highlight the practical learning, teamwork and personal growth that formed a central part of the voyage experience.

A Lasting Impact

The Ocean Youth Trust voyage provided much more than an opportunity to learn about sailing. It created an environment where young people could challenge themselves, build confidence and develop skills that will support future education, training and employment pathways.

Key outcomes included:

  • Increased self-confidence and independence.
  • Development of teamwork and leadership skills.
  • Improved communication and problem-solving abilities.
  • Enhanced resilience through new challenges.
  • Greater social awareness and relationship-building skills.
  • Opportunities to experience healthy living and outdoor learning.
  • Creation of a strong sense of community and belonging.

The experience demonstrated how meaningful outdoor learning opportunities can help young people develop important life and employability skills in a supportive and inspiring environment.

By stepping aboard and embracing the challenges of life at sea, participants discovered new strengths, built lasting friendships and gained experiences that will remain with them long after the voyage ended.
