Project Description
Inverkeithing’s Stylists to the Stars
Inverkeithing High School has completed it’s first year of a Pre- Apprenticeship Hairdressing Course in partnership with Lime Salon. John Bailie (salon owner) has been working with three High Schools across Fife to support young people with training and work experience in Hairdressing. This has been an incredibly unique and special partnership for the young people involved.
Six young people across three High Schools in Fife were given the opportunity to take part in a four-month pilot programme aimed at supporting young people interested in careers in hairdressing into an apprenticeship. This pre-apprenticeship programme gave the young people the opportunity to develop salon, product and style knowledge as well as develop key skills within a salon environment.
Lime Salon has developed a fully equipped training academy for the young people to attend. As well as learning essential health and safety procedures and hair care routines within the salon the young people have had the opportunity to be creative and to demonstrate their creativity and learning on real models. Yvonne from Lime Salon has worked with the students each week and has noticed a massive difference in their confidence and communication.
Two young people in particular have shone throughout the course and I am delighted to share that Ria from Inverkeithing High School is one of those students. Ria has had exceptional attendance, a positive and willing to learn attitude and natural rapport with staff and customers. As a result Ria has been offered a full time apprenticeship with Lime Salon and can begin her hairdressing career. Projects like this are incredibly unique and offer a real insight into the industry.
As a school we are incredibly excited to work with Lime Salon again in the future and to hopefully open many more doors for young people who are keen and driven towards a career in hairdressing. A huge thank you to John, Yvonne and their teams that have worked so hard to support this project.
Ria said about her experience,
I absolutely love it here and can’t wait to start my apprenticeship properly.
The pupils teacher reflected on the programme and said,
A really great project with such a successful outcome for two young people being offered apprenticeships!
Yvonne from Lime Salon has been integral to the success of this programme and said,
It has been great to see them all grow in confidence over the last 15 weeks.
