Tackling a Real-World Challenge

The project was designed to encourage learners to engage with sustainability and environmental issues while developing key workplace skills including teamwork, problem-solving, communication, research and presentation skills. 

Working as part of the Solutions for the Planet competition, pupils explored the environmental impact of trawling and dredging on marine ecosystems and developed a proposal showing how kelp restoration could support marine biodiversity, improve coastal ecosystems and create wider environmental benefits. 

The team’s research and commitment to the project resulted in a successful presentation at the regional finals, securing their place at the prestigious National Finals in London.

Working with Industry Experts

A key strength of the project was the support pupils received from a range of employers, universities and industry specialists.

Throughout the competition, the team worked with mentors and professionals from:

• Siemens Mobility
• University of St Andrews
• Kelp and Kindred
• Seaweed Academy at the Scottish Association of Marine Science (SAMS)
• Solutions for the Planet
• Industry mentors and judges from across the environmental and business sectors 

These organisations provided expertise, mentoring and feedback, helping pupils strengthen both the environmental and enterprise aspects of their proposal. The experience gave learners direct access to professional networks and demonstrated how businesses, education and industry can collaborate to inspire future innovators.

The regional judging panel included representatives from Aqua Consultants, the UK Student Climate Network and CodeBase, providing valuable feedback on the team’s environmental solution and business model. 

Presenting on a National Stage

Following their success in the regional finals, the pupils earned the opportunity to travel to London and present their project at the National Finals at the Palace of Westminster.

The experience provided learners with the opportunity to showcase their ideas on a national platform, meet finalists from across the UK and further develop their confidence in presenting to business and industry professionals. 

Through the competition, the team demonstrated exceptional creativity, environmental awareness and professionalism, applying classroom learning to a real-world challenge with significant social and environmental relevance.

Feedback and Recognition

Feedback from the regional judging panel was overwhelmingly positive, with judges praising the team’s extensive networking, research and engagement with experts throughout the project. 

Judges specifically highlighted:

• The strength of the partnerships developed with external organisations.
• The relevance of the environmental issue being addressed.
• The quality of the team’s research and presentation.
• Their commitment to developing a practical and sustainable solution.

The panel encouraged the pupils to continue refining their presentation skills and strengthening the commercial aspects of their proposal ahead of the National Finals. 

Creativity Beyond the Project

Alongside their sustainability proposal, the team created a crocheted mascot inspired by the popular Jellycat style. The mascot became a symbol of the project and helped bring their environmental message to life, generating additional interest and engagement from supporters and stakeholders. 

The creative addition reflected the pupils’ enthusiasm, teamwork and ability to think beyond the core competition brief while effectively promoting their campaign. 

Impact and Outcomes

The Solutions for the Planet project provided participants with meaningful opportunities to develop a wide range of skills that will support future education, training and employment pathways. Key outcomes included:
