Following the success of the programme across Fife primary schools in previous years, the initiative was expanded to secondary learners, giving pupils the opportunity to develop knowledge and skills that could one day help save a life. More than just a first aid course, the programme was designed to build confidence, support decision-making under pressure and encourage young people to take responsibility in emergency situations.

Developing Skills for Life

Each S1 and S2 pupil participated in a two-period practical workshop covering a range of essential first aid topics, including CPR, use of a defibrillator and placing a casualty into the recovery position. Through hands-on activities and realistic scenarios, learners were able to practise their new skills in a safe and supportive environment.

The interactive nature of the programme encouraged pupils to engage fully with the learning experience and helped them understand the importance of remaining calm and acting quickly during emergencies. By developing these practical skills at an early age, learners gained the confidence to support others both within their communities and throughout later life. 

Working Together to Support Young People

The programme was delivered by New Forest First Aid Training and made possible through funding from ExxonMobil Fife Ethylene Plant, whose investment helped ensure that young people could access high-quality first aid training at no cost to the school.

ExxonMobil has a long-standing connection to the local community, having supported previous Mini Medics programmes across Fife. Their continued investment reflects a commitment to creating a positive legacy by equipping young people with valuable skills that can benefit them for the rest of their lives.

Impact and Outcomes

The Mini Medics Programme provided pupils with essential practical skills while increasing their confidence in responding to emergencies. Through hands-on learning, participants developed a greater understanding of:

• CPR and lifesaving interventions.
• Safe use of a defibrillator.
• Recovery position techniques.
• Decision-making in emergency situations.
• Personal confidence and responsibility.

Beyond the technical skills gained, the programme helped young people recognise the importance of community responsibility and the role they can play in supporting others when it matters most. By investing in learners today, the programme is helping create a generation of young people equipped with the knowledge, confidence and skills to make a difference in the future.
