Project Description

Industry: Early Learning and Childcare

Activity Name: as stated

Activity Type: Work Inspiration and Preparation / Sector Awareness

Businesses: As listed

Lochgelly High School hosted a Childcare and Early Years Careers Fair designed to give learners meaningful contact with employers, training providers and community organisations. The event aimed to build S2 and S3 pupils’ confidence in speaking to employers, broaden awareness of future pathways, and encourage career exploration across the childcare and early years sector.

Learner conversations highlighted that many pupils were unsure about the different roles available within childcare or believed it was limited to nursery work only. The event was designed to challenge that misconception by showcasing a wide range of roles within early learning, family support, education and community services.

Employer Involvement

A strong mix of organisations attended, their involvement reflects positive local partnerships and a shared commitment to supporting the young people of Lochgelly.

Organisations in Attendance:

  • NHS
  • Community Development Team
  • Fife Council Play Team
  • CHAS
  • Youth 1st
  • Local Nurseries

Alongside their contribution to this event, many of these organisations have also agreed to support Lochgelly High School throughout the year by offering work placement opportunities for learners.

Outcomes

  • Career Management Skills:

Learners explored a wide range of industries and strengthened their understanding of future opportunities.

  • Positive Destinations:

Several learners showed interest in following up with organisations for clubs, volunteering or further conversations. Pupils have a further understanding of the different sectors and go to find out real life examples from people from their community of how they managed to secure their current job.

What Happened

40 pupils who have an interest in Child services when they leave school, attended a carousel event with various employers who all brought engaging hands on tasks. This included a primary teacher showcasing different ways to teach about the human body – e.g using dry pasta.
