Project Description
Industry / sector: Professional animal care
Activity Type: Work Inspiration & Preparation /Routes and Pathways
Businesses involved: Sruc elmwood
Name of School: Madras college
Event
The Animal Care Unit based at the Elmwood Campus of SRUC came into Madras to host an Information Session to let pupils know about the courses they have on offer and what jobs and careers they can lead to.
A lecturer in Animal Care came along with two current students to discuss the courses available at the Elmwood Campus which offer an NC, HNC and an HND in Animal Care. Pupils were given an insight in to what is studied and what the practical elements of courses entail. They learned about the wide array of jobs that former students have gone onto from dog grooming to working in a falconry center. The two students in attendance also shared that they hope to go in to be vets.
The highlight of the session however was undoubtedly the chance to interact with some of the small animals that were brought along. Pupils just loved patting Daisy the dog, Bella the rabbit, Cullen the blue tongued skink and two little mice.
Objective
To inform students who want to work with animals in any capacity about the prospective career pathways available.
Outcome
It was attended by 35 pupils from S3-6 who have shown an interest in working with animals. There were two sessions in total held over the course of an afternoon.
Involved Partners
SRUC: The modern animal care facilities at SRUC let students get hands-on with a wide range of species and learn from experienced staff including veterinary nurses and animal care specialists. All of their courses have clear progression routes, enabling students to gain further qualifications after completing their course to help improve their career prospects.
As the course was under threat at its current location in Cupar last year, but is now secure, the team wanted to ensure all local schools are aware that it is still running and what career pathways are available.
Feedback
Hayley (S4) “I really enjoyed learning about the courses, and I
especially loved the very fluffy bunny!”
Mitchell (S4) “It was mind-blowing. I am definitely considering a career working with animals as a result.”
Erin (S5) “I found it really educational and loved seeing all the animals.”
Conclusion
The careers information session in animal care highlighted the incredible opportunities available in this rewarding and impactful field. Students left inspired and equipped with valuable insights to pursue a profession in working with animals.
One of the pupils who attended went straight to her guidance teacher to ask to apply for the NC. She is currently completing her application form to start next year!
