Project Description

Industry: Healthcare
Activity Type: Work Inspiration and Preparation / Sector Awareness
Businesses involved: NHS Fife
Name of School: Woodmill High School

In an effort to boost health and social care career awareness among young people at Woodmill High School, we collaborated with NHS Fife to offer an interactive, hands-on event aimed at S2/S3 pupils who are considering careers in that area.

The event was designed to provide students with a comprehensive and engaging experience, allowing them to explore a variety of healthcare roles through immersive, practical activities. Pupils moved between different stations, each highlighting key aspects of healthcare careers, including:

  • Virtual Reality (VR) laboratory simulations
  • A simulation ward showcasing cutting-edge medical technology
  • Infection control practices
  • Interactive discussions with NHS staff from diverse roles

At each station, students had the opportunity to engage in hands-on activities such as inserting and cleaning a cannula, testing their handwashing techniques, and experiencing how simulation patients are used in training environments. This exposure broadened their understanding of healthcare professions beyond the more commonly known roles, giving them a deeper insight into the wide variety of opportunities available within the sector.

The event was a resounding success, creating a vibrant atmosphere that encouraged pupils to think critically about their career paths and future study choices. It also allowed students to reflect on how they can best plan their transition into the senior phase of school, ensuring they are gaining the relevant skills and experiences to align with their career aspirations.

The feedback from pupils was overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing how the event had influenced their career thinking and made them more informed about the range of roles available in the healthcare sector.

Student Testimonials:

  • Ruby, S3:
“It was so good to speak to people in different jobs and to see the simulation patients and how they are used. I didn’t realize that some of these jobs were available in Fife.”
  • Hannah, S3:
“I had a lot of fun. I knew I wanted to work in healthcare, but wasn’t sure exactly what. Talking to the different people in the various roles was really helpful. It was great to try things hands-on rather than just listen; it was quite different from school. My favorite station was the simulation ward. It’s helped me consider more career options.”
  • Skye, S3:
“I want to work as a physiotherapist, but coming here today has helped me feel more confident in that choice. I really enjoyed learning about the different simulations. It’s nice to be out of school and see things in the real world.”
  • Lily, S3:
“It was fun and exciting, and it was great to have the opportunity to learn outside of school. I really enjoyed trying the hands-on stations. I want to become a midwife, but if I change my mind, I would definitely consider becoming a simulation technician— their job sounded interesting and varied.”
