Project Description

This initiative was organised following a referral from the SQA to DYW regarding the Caddie Academy, managed by Sean Wiseman, the Caddie Manager at Kingsbarns Golf Links. Sean aimed to attract high-calibre students to work as golf caddies during the summer. The Caddie Academy offers an SQA level 7 accredited certificate in “Golf Caddying,” designed to provide a pathway for suitable students to become caddies.

Madras High School pupils Cameron McDonald and Leo Brady participated in this pilot project.

Event/Activity Overview

Cameron and Leo completed 12 hours of coaching on the golf course, divided over four afternoons. They learned various practical skills essential for caddying, such as:

  • Green reading
  • Providing accurate yardages
  • Giving shot selection advice
  • Understanding caddie conduct and positioning

Additionally, they completed an online theory assessment covering:

  • The history of caddying
  • Essential skills for high-performing caddying
  • Communication skills related to customer service

Feedback from Participants

Cameron McDonald: “I have thoroughly enjoyed the caddie coaching course and have learnt a lot, not only about caddying and golf, but also from the people I got the opportunity to meet. One of the parts of the course I enjoyed the most was working with the other caddies to refine and perfect caddy skills as a team by giving each other feedback. It was a really useful format where we could watch each other caddy and learn from what we each did well and what we could improve on.

I learned a lot about course management and shot selection for golfers of different abilities. The environment of the sessions was extremely supportive and fun. It was extremely easy to ask questions, seek feedback, and see how you can improve. I would thoroughly recommend the course. I’ve started to caddie recently and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. The clientele is mainly overseas visitors and whilst it’s been a challenge, it’s been a lot of fun for the most part. The earning potential is excellent and working outdoors is really enjoyable.”

Leo Brady: “The coaching course at Kingsbarns was conducted by Sean Wiseman. I was coached within a small group of people similar to my age and background. The coaching covered a wide range of topics from the basics of caddying to more advanced levels of customer service, like dealing with conflict and complaints on the golf course. Sean emphasised the need to tailor our skills and services to meet the demands of different types of golfers/people.

The best part of the job seems to be working and exercising outdoors and in an environment that is pretty much ‘tech-free.’ I can leave my phone switched off for 4-5 hours.”

Conclusion

This programme successfully provided students with the skills and knowledge needed for caddying, enhancing their employability and offering them a rewarding experience in the golf tourism industry.
