Sixty S2 pupils from St Andrews RC High School recently took part in the Smallpeice Trust STEM Day – Aircraft Challenge, an exciting, hands-on engineering experience designed to develop employability skills while introducing learners to the world of engineering, aviation and STEM careers.
Delivered by the Smallpeice Trust, the full-day challenge provided pupils with the opportunity to work collaboratively in teams to design, build, test and refine model aircraft while applying STEM knowledge in a practical and engaging environment. The event formed part of the school’s Developing the Young Workforce offer and aimed to raise aspirations, develop workplace skills and demonstrate the real-world applications of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Bringing STEM Learning to Life
The Aircraft Challenge introduced pupils to key concepts including aerodynamics, engineering design and the physics of flight. Working in mixed-gender teams, learners were tasked with designing and constructing a model aircraft before testing and refining their designs through a series of practical challenges.
Throughout the day, pupils followed an engineering design process, planning their approach, building prototypes, evaluating results and making improvements based on testing outcomes. This encouraged learners to think critically, solve problems collaboratively and develop resilience when faced with setbacks or unexpected results.
By applying classroom learning to a practical challenge, pupils gained a greater understanding of how STEM subjects are used in industry and the valuable role they play in solving real-world problems.

The event was delivered by facilitators from the Smallpeice Trust, a leading educational charity specialising in STEM outreach and engineering engagement programmes. The organisation works with schools across the UK to inspire young people to consider careers in engineering and related industries.
