Project Description
Industry: Healthcare
Activity Type: Work Inspiration Event
Businesses involved: NHS, Queen Margaret Hospital
Name of School: Woodmill High School
Event Details
DYW Fife and NHS Fife partnered to offer a session of interactive events aimed at S4 pupils who are considering a career in medicine.
Pupils had to work round different stations which immersed them into a typical day for the medical professionals including:
- History taking
- How to put on scrubs
- Suturing
- Visual impairments
- Taking vitals
- CPR
They had the opportunity to get hands on at each session and this was followed by a session with a Doctor and medical students who discussed the pathways for their roles in detail. This opportunity has been invaluable to the pupils who attended as they do not have any familial links to Doctors. It has given them an opportunity to think about how to plan their senior phase to ensure that they are developing the relevant skills and experiences ahead of their UCAS application in S6.
Pupil Feedback
“It was really informative. The resources and stations were good and I really enjoyed how hands on it was. I feel better prepared for how to go about taking patient history- especially for more vulnerable groups such as those with visual impairments. I have come away with some ideas of activities I could run at our in school medical club which will help others.”- Liam, S4
“All the instructors were lovely and open to answering questions. The sessions were really informative and interesting. I feel more confident about what I need to do in the next couple of years to prepare for applying to medicine.” – Libby, S4
