Project Description

On Friday, April 19th, twelve pupils from Glenrothes High School volunteered at the National Schools Aquathlon Championships held at Michael Woods Sports Centre. Alicia Deans and Craigie-Lee Paterson from Triathlon Scotland contacted the school to seek support for this prestigious annual event, which attracts schools from across Scotland. The pupils from Glenrothes High School were invited to assist as lap counters and course marshals, providing crucial support to ensure the smooth running of the event.

What Happened at the Event/Activity

The day started with all volunteers meeting in the gym hall at Michael Woods Sports Centre to sign in. Pupils were organised into teams and paired with adult volunteers. Duties were assigned, with most pupils taking on poolside roles. Each volunteer received a lanyard detailing their tasks and the event schedule.

Pupils acted as lap counters for their assigned lanes, organized swimmers, completed registers, assigned swim cap colors, and ensured fair and accurate lap counting throughout the event. This hands-on experience allowed them to develop and demonstrate responsibility and precision in their roles.

Feedback from Those in Attendance

The feedback from Triathlon Scotland staff was overwhelmingly positive. They praised the Glenrothes High School pupils for their maturity, precision, and teamwork. Members of the public who volunteered also commented on the outstanding performance and professionalism displayed by the students.

Further Considerations

The successful participation of Glenrothes High School pupils in the National Schools Aquathlon Championships has paved the way for future collaborations with Triathlon Scotland. Plans are underway for further volunteer opportunities, providing more students with the chance to gain invaluable experience and develop essential skills. This partnership highlights the benefits of engaging young people in high-profile events, fostering personal growth and community involvement.
