Project Description

For the past 10 years Viv has been an Advanced Healthcare Support Worker with NHS Fife, based at the Victoria Hospital in Fife within the Acute Medical Admissions Unit. Viv is the first port of call for any patient being admitted into this unit with daily tasks including completion of paperwork for doctors, reading ECG’s, Neurological observations and the categorisation of patients as they are admitted.

Her kind, caring and compassionate nature along with her ability to adapt to every changing situation are key qualities in Viv’s ability to carry out this role. Over the years Viv has enhanced her clinical skills through continual training.

Lately Viv’s role has required her to work on the frontline in the national response to covid-19 by testing patients as they are admitted to the unit. The increased use of PPE in comparison to what was used pre covid is daunting for both the staff giving and patients receiving care. It has been difficult for patients who are unable to have physical contact with family and Viv has been supporting patients by keeping families updated on progress and connecting them virtually where possible.

Viv has been fully invested in her role with NHS Fife

‘Working with patients, the diversity of the role and seeing patient health improve due to the care and support we have given them makes my job really enjoyable and worthwhile. It’s hard work but I would certainly encourage any young person looking at a career in healthcare to embrace the opportunities available to them.’
