Project Description
Activity Type: Work Inspiration and Preparation
Businesses involved: Campion Homes
Name of School: Waid Academy
A group of S4-S5 learners at Waid Academy with an interest in pursuing careers in the trades, were given a valuable opportunity to enhance their understanding of the industry. The learners visited a local building site, where they had the chance to explore the different stages of a construction project, meet various tradespeople, and ask questions about the different roles and responsibilities within the sector.
A Hands-On Experience
During the visit, students were given a comprehensive health and safety briefing, ensuring they understood the importance of safety on a construction site. They were also provided with full personal protective equipment (PPE), allowing them to feel like real tradesmen as they toured the site.
The visit took them through the entire construction process, from the planning and groundwork stages to the finishing touches of a new home development. Learners were exposed to a range of trade skills and were given valuable insights into potential apprenticeship opportunities available in the construction industry.
Key Partners Involved
Campion Homes, a well-known local development company, generously hosted the site visit. Campion Homes is committed to supporting young people interested in the trades and plays a key role in Developing the Young Workforce (DYW) Fife. The company recognises the importance of skilled trades in the ongoing success of the construction industry and is dedicated to encouraging the next generation of tradespeople.
By partnering with the school, Campion Homes aims to address the growing demand for qualified workers in the sector while simultaneously strengthening the local community and economy. The opportunity to interact directly with the team behind a live building project provided students with a real-world perspective that will serve them well in their future careers.
Event Highlights and Impact
The site visit was an exciting and enriching experience for the students. They were able to observe scaffolding, cranes, machinery, and busy workers in action, gaining a deeper understanding of the scale of teamwork required in construction.
The hands-on experience left a lasting impression on the learners, inspiring them to think critically about the various trades involved in the construction process. They developed a greater appreciation for the level of detail, effort, and coordination that goes into building structures from the ground up.
The feedback from both the learners and staff underscored the value of the site visit:
Mrs. Anderson, PE & Dance Teacher / DYW Coordinator:
“Site Manager Kevin provided the learners with an excellent insight into all stages of the building site. He was extremely informative and welcomed many questions from the students. The learners left the visit with a deeper knowledge of the various roles in construction and felt enthusiastic about their future career options.”
The site visit organised for S4-S5 learners provided a unique, real-world insight into the trades, sparking interest and enthusiasm among the students. Not only did it give them a clearer understanding of what goes into construction, but it also introduced them to potential career paths and apprenticeship opportunities. The collaboration between the school and Campion Homes has proven to be an invaluable experience for all involved, helping to shape the future of young people interested in the trades.
