Project Description

Fife Historic Building Trust (FHBT) is delivering the Inverkeithing Heritage Regeneration (IHR) project on behalf of Fife Council. As part of this project, two private sector modern apprenticeships in traditional skills can be funded at up to 50% in year one. The funding comes from Historic Environment Scotland, who are aware of a severe shortage of skilled trades and the threat to traditional buildings.

Opportunity for employers: Part-funding for two year 1 apprentices
FHBT, through the project, have funding to help employers take on two apprentices, in traditional skills in the construction sector. Support for the apprentice wages costs, of up to 50%, are available. Fife Historic Buildings Trust will also be offering additional training and study visits, for example, to an A listed building repair and adaptation contract.

What are construction sector traditional skills?
Buildings from before 1919 generally followed a similar pattern, and materials, for centuries. Stone, timber, lead, glass, cast iron, plaster and lime finishes. For example stone masons, roofers, lead specialists, joinery firms, traditional plasters, sign writers would all qualify, or contact for more details to see if you qualify.

Is there a requirement for organisation type?
No, any employer keen to train a new start through an apprenticeship in traditional skills, is welcome to apply for this funding opportunity. A sole trader, SME, or a multi-national. The goal is to increase the skilled workforce in Fife, to better maintain, repair and adapt the rich heritage of around 10% of Scotland’s listed building total, and for buildings in Fife’s 48 Conservation Areas. Fife Council Employability may also be able to help recruit a suitable candidate, and additionally support the wage costs in year 1.
